Red

It was winter. Ranveer was sitting on the bench outside a park, alone. Suddenly, it started snowing. The snowflakes planted themselves on his coat, hat and hope. Hope to meet Avanti. He opened his palm and a snowflake rested itself there. He made a fist and held it close to his heart. It felt like her, delicate and innocent. A tear rolled out of his eye. But he kept the promise, wiped it off and left for home which was less of it since Avanti left. He opened the door and walked in. It was dark. Not just the room but also his mind. He dropped himself on the couch, a dim light on and a book in hand. He missed his Avanti today, a lot more than usual. Maybe because years back they had met on the same day. He decided to her. He opened the book.. Avanti had always been Ranveer's first. His first friend, first crush, first date, first love, first kiss and only wife.

He had never felt so complete before. He decided to propose to her. Being a struggler doesn't pay you off that well so he got a red rose on the way to meet her. And there she was, waiting for him.. Maybe not just for 15 mins but for lifetimes. The look in her eyes said so. The world blurred out cause his world was standing right in front of him. It was clear. He walked up to her and proposed to her. A nod, a tear, a hug and a kiss and the rose.

A promise to live together was made and even fulfilled. But there's always a "hidden" secret. Avanti had it too. It took few years after their marriage for Ranveer to figure out. He saw her grow old and pale. But her eyes and smile still made his heart skip a beat. Avanti, laid on the bed seemed lost in thoughts. Ranveer kissed her forehead and asked her. She said, "nothing." It was her last day. Ranveer knew it. He wanted her to leave happily. So he looked at her and smiled. Sat beside her and held her. She took out a book which was under her pillow and gave it to him. Told him, "I can't let our promise die with me." Ranveer kissed her and a few moments later, she was gone.

He froze. He saw his Avanti go away. Away, forever. He opened the book and there was the red rose that he had proposed to her with. It's been 20 years now. He has opened the book again which he had protected all these years. The red rose wasn't just the promise. It was Avanti.
